1215 Photography:  Exposure

In this module, you will learn the technical and creative uses of aperture, shutter speed and ISO, and demonstrate how combinations of the three elements give very different results.  You will also discover how a correct exposure is obtained through the combination of shutter speed, aperture and ISO, which make up the photographic triangle.

Watch the following videos to guide your learning here.

The Exposure Triangle:

ISO

Before you look at choosing AV or TV to achieve your desired photograph, most times one should start by choosing an appropriate ISO for the given light conditions.

Assignment:

1215.1  Aperture

Define aperture in terms of light entering the camera.  Be sure to indicate what the numbers mean in terms of light opening.

Describe the effect of aperture on depth of field using correct terminology.

How does aperture work with shutter speed to obtain appropriate amounts of light to achieve a quality photograph.

Use one of the digital SRL cameras and use the AV (aperture priority) setting to take photographs emphasising various aperture settings to obtain specific effects.  You will post 5 of your best images.  When you post your images, you are required to post the camera settings for each image and a written desciption of how aperture plays a part in the effect displayed in each image.

1215.2 Shutter Speed

Define shutter speed in terms of light entering the camera. Include some approptiate shutter speeds for typical photography situations.

Describe how shutter speed plays a role in freezing action, implying motion, and low light settings.

Use one of the digital SRL cameras and use the TV (shutter speed priority) setting to take photographs emphasising various shutter speed settings to obtain specific effects.  You will post 5 of your best images.  When you post your images, you are required to post the camera settings for each image and a written desciption of how shutter speed plays a part in the effect displayed in each image.

1215.3  ISO

Define ISO.  Include ISO numbers and situations where certain ISO's would be favorable.

What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of shooting in higher ISO's?

1215.4  Manual Mode

What is the camera's light meter used for?

Explain what it means when an image is over exposed and underexposed.  Include an example of each from the photos that you take.

Use one of the digital SRL cameras and use the manual setting to take photographs emphasising various aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings to obtain specific effects.  You will post 5 of your best images.  When you post your images, you are required to post the camera settings for each image and a written desciption of how aperture, shutter speed and ISO plays a part in the effect displayed in each image.
